Background: The nest box is located a village in the Jezreel Valley Valley, Israel, in between Nazareth and not far from the Palestinian city Jenin. This nest box was used the last three years by barn owls. Even though a lone male barn owl appeared in the box in 2014, it looked as though he did not have a mate. Jackdaws then built a nest during March and then left the box. Kestrels then occupied the nest box and laid 4 (first on April 15) eggs on the jackdaw nest. You can hear many local birds during both the day and night. There is a long-eared owl pair breeding in a unused crow nest that can be heard during the night. The kestrel pair is part of a project of farmers to control rodents in agriculture. For more information about the project please click here
